The Guildhall

Cathedral Square

You found page 5 of the chronicle. It reads: THE

A few steps away stands a chamber on stone legs. The Guildhall was built in 1671, in warm local limestone, by the master mason John Lovin. It was paid for by public subscription and set deliberately facing the Cathedral gateway, on or near the site of a covered Butter Cross.

It is likely the city's Feoffees built the Guildhall to celebrate the restoration of Charles II in 1660. The gable carries painted royal arms, between shields for the bishop, the dean and two local families.

The clue to the next page

Walk through the old stone gateway that the chamber on legs was built to face. In the cloisters beyond, find the house where a schoolgirl learned and then taught, before she became a nurse the whole world would know.
