Town Bridge and the Customs House

Where Bridge Street meets the River Nene

You found page 2 of the chronicle. It reads: REAL

The river carried the city's trade, so the chronicle sends you to its crossing. The present iron bridge was designed by Sir John Fowler and opened on 13 December 1872. Beside it stands the Customs House, probably built in the middle of the eighteenth century, when improvements to the Nene let boats work upriver from Wisbech.

The first Town Bridge over the Nene was built of wood by Abbot Godfrey of Crowland in 1307. Its wooden successor was recorded as unsafe in 1856, which led to the iron bridge of 1872.

Blue plaques: on the north-eastern side of the bridge, and above the Customs House door.

Leave the river and climb to the street of priests. Find the grand house that mended the city's people before it kept the city's treasures.
