A treasure hunt through the city centre · proof of concept

The Lost Chronicle of Peterborough

Long ago, so the tale goes, a chronicler wrote down the secret of Peterborough and then lost heart. Rather than burn the book, the chronicler tore out seven pages and hid one at each of seven places, from the river to the great church. Each page tells you where the next is hidden. Find all seven and the message can be read again.

The chronicle, its pages and its treasure are a story made up for this game. The history at each stop is real.

How are you travelling?

Take a bus to the start, then walk: the stops are a few minutes apart and the streets between the Museum and the Cathedral are for pedestrians, so no bus runs between them.

Start the hunt

Your first clue is below. Work out where it leads, go there, and the first page of the chronicle is yours.

The first clue

Seek the place the city built for summer, where three pools lie open to the sky beside the Embankment and, by tradition, the new mayor is first into the water each year.

Peterborough Lido

Bishop's Road, beside the Embankment

How to get there

The entrance is on Bishop's Road, beside the Embankment, about 10 minutes on foot from Cathedral Square.

Bus: From Queensgate Bus Station, route 4 (about every 30 minutes) and route 61 (less often) serve the stop called Peterborough Lido, about 70 metres from the entrance. Many more routes, among them 1, 3, 5, 5A, 6, 33 and X31, stop at Rivergate, about 300 metres away.

Before you set off

Keep to public paths and pavements, and cross roads at crossings. If you are cycling, obey the road and cycling rules and walk your bike where signs ask you to. Do not go into private or closed-off areas: every clue can be solved from a public place, or from the 360° view on this site. The Cathedral and the Museum keep their own opening hours.
