The Cathedral Precincts and Laurel Court

Through the gateway from Cathedral Square

You found page 6 of the chronicle. It reads: CITY'S

Pass through the gateway and the city falls quiet. In the cloisters to the south of the Cathedral stands Laurel Court, where Margaret Gibson and Annette van Dissel set up a school in 1871. One of its pupils would become known around the world.

Edith Cavell was educated at Laurel Court between roughly 1884 and 1886. She later trained as a nurse at the London Hospital and led a nursing school in Brussels. After the German occupation she was arrested in August 1915, and executed that October.
