Priestgate
You found page 3 of the chronicle. It reads: TREASURE
The keepers of the city's memory live in a grand house on Priestgate. It was built in 1816 for Thomas Alderson Cooke, a magistrate, over cellars from a sixteenth-century house. In 1931 Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart, chairman of the London Brick Company, gave it to be the city's museum, and the art gallery was added in 1939.
After Cooke died, Earl Fitzwilliam bought the house and let it be used as a public dispensary and infirmary, the city's first hospital, from 1857 until the War Memorial Hospital opened in 1928.
