Peterborough Lido

Bishop's Road, beside the Embankment

You found page 1 of the chronicle. It reads: THE

The chronicle's first page was hidden where the city comes to swim. Peterborough's open-air pool was designed by a panel of local architects, with touches of art deco, and is now a Grade II listed building. In June 1940 it took a direct hit in the city's first air raid of the Second World War, and was soon open again.

The Lido opened in 1936 and cost £20,800. It was listed Grade II in 1992. By tradition the new mayor is first into the water each season.

The clue to the next page

Follow the river west to where a churchman from the fens first crossed in timber, seven hundred years ago. Iron carries the road now, and a house built for river trade keeps watch at its north end.
